The Sacred Farewell: Understanding Halq and Taqsir in Pilgrimage

Allah indeed showed His Messenger the true vision, one fully in accord with reality. If Allah so wills you shall certainly enter the Inviolable Mosque, in full security, you will shave your heads and cut your hair short, and do so without any fear. He knew what you did not know, and He granted you a victory near at hand even before (the fulfilment of the vision).

In this ayah, our Creator is speaking about the Umrah that would be performed in Dhul-Qi’dah, 7 A.H. Allah is assuring the Muslims that the vision of the Messenger (ﷺ) was true and that they would perform Umrah in complete safety.

The Prophet (ﷺ) has shown us in detail how to perform Halq and Taqsir. But it is remarkable to reflect that Allah directly mentions both Halq (shave your heads) and Taqsir (shorten your hair).

It is a mandatory act of worship for both Hajj and Umrah. However, many questions surround it. But the answers are very simple, and there is almost no difference of opinion among scholars, including the four madhhabs.

What is Halq and Taqsir

Halq – The arabic word Halq (حلق) means to shave or to have a hair cut. It sounds very similar to the word that means throat. But the root words are diffferent and the they are different parts of speech.

Leaving the grammer aside, Halq in context of Hajj and Umrah means to shave the entire head using a razor or shaving tool so that no hair remains. It is one of the final rituals of both Hajj and Umrah, after which the pilgrim exits the state of Ihram and resumes normal activities.

It is only for men. Women are required to perform Taqsir as the final act of worship in Hajj and Umrah. Halq is not permitted for women.

Taqsir – Taqsir is trimming of hair in place of Halq. So, you can trim your hair about an inch instead of shaving it fully.

And of course, women do not require to do Halq. So, they will do Taqsir. However, men who have long hair can also do Taqsir. But Halq is far far better in reward then Taqsir.

Timing of Hald and Taqsir During Umrah

Halq or Taqsir is performed after completing both Tawaf and Sa‘y. Only then can one exit the state of Ihram. Doing it before these rituals is invalid and requires a penalty (dam).

Timing of Hald and Taqsir During Hajj

Halq or Taqsir is done on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, after the following:

  1. Ramy al-Jamarah al-‘Aqabah (stoning the large pillar)
  2. Sacrifice (of animal)
  3. Then, Halq or Taqsir

This marks Tahallul al-Awwal, allowing the pilgrim to exit Ihram except for marital relations.

How to Perform Halq (Complete Shave)

Now it seems fairly easy. But there are many instances where people are getting it wrong or overthinking it. As it is a required act for the completion of Hajj and Umrah, getting it wrong can cost you your Hajj and Umrah or atleast a penalty (dam). So, please read and understand this section so nothing gets wrong.

Maintain the scequence and timing

Halq must be done after completing the required rites: Tawaf and Sa‘y in Umrah; and Ramy and sacrifice (if applicable) in Hajj. You can not do it before these rituals. And you can not leave ihram before you have completed this act. However, you do not need to haist to do it.

Allah says in the Quran

Complete the pilgrimage and minor pilgrimage for Allah. But if prevented ˹from proceeding˺, then ˹offer˺ whatever sacrificial animals you can afford. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal reaches its destination. But if any of you is ill or has a scalp ailment ˹requiring shaving˺, then compensate either by fasting, charity, or a sacrificial offering.

Begin from the right side and end with the lft side

Start shaving from the right side of the head, as was the practice of the Prophet (ﷺ). Then move to the left, ensuring the entire head is shaved.

Anas b. Malik (رضي الله عنه) reported:

When Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) had thrown pebbles at the Jamra and had sacrificed the animal, he turned (the right side) of his head towards the barber, and i. e shaved it. He then called Abu Talha al-Ansari and gave it to him. He then turned his left side and asked him (the barber) to shave. And he (the barber) shaved. and gave it to Abu Talha and told him to distribute it amongst the people.

Complete shave

Even a strand of hair will disqualify the Halq. So, if you are doing Halq, make sure it is a clean shave.

No restriction on the place

You can do it in the comfort of your home or hotel, or you can visit a barber shop. Please do not do it inside the holy mosque. When you come out of the mosque, you will see many runners calling you for a shave. I have personally taken their service, and it is not bad. But nothing is stopping you from doing it yourself.

Not for women

There are women who are intrigued to do Halq because of the immense reward. However, women don’t need to do it to receive that reward. It is prohibited for women to shave their heads except in cases of necessity.

How to Perform Taqsir (Trimming of Hair)

Doing Taqsir requires a bit more understanding to do it correctly. Trimming hair is not complicated, but questions arise, such as how much to trim or from where to trim. I am going to show some of the answers here.

  • For men

For male pilgrims who choose Taqsir over Halq, the trimming must be done completely and correctly. A symbolic snip from one side or a few hairs is not sufficient according to most scholars.

Trim from All Parts of the Head

Taqsir is not just a token snip of hair. Scholars emphasize that the trimming must involve the entire head. At a minimum, the trimming must be noticeable and involve multiple areas—front, back, sides, and top. Merely clipping hair from a single spot is insufficient and may render the act invalid according to some schools.

The Shafi‘i school is particularly strict in this matter, stating that at least three hairs from each part of the head should be trimmed. The Hanafi school holds that the trimming must cover at least one-fourth (25%) of the hair. This means that one cannot simply clip a few strands and consider the ritual complete—it must reflect sincere participation in the act of humility before Allah.

Amount to Trim

While there is no fixed length universally agreed upon, most scholars recommend trimming a fingertip’s length (approximately 1–2 cm) from each section. This ensures that the trimming is visible and not symbolic.

If the hair is already very short, even a minimal trim will suffice as long as the action of shortening is performed and the required percentage of hair is addressed.

Maintain the Order of Rites

It is essential that Taqsir be done only after completing the required pilgrimage rites. For Umrah, it must come after Tawaf and Sa‘y. In Hajj, it follows Ramy al-Jamarah al-‘Aqabah and animal sacrifice (if applicable). Performing Taqsir before its appointed time is a mistake and requires an expiation (dam).

  • For women

For female pilgrims, Taqsir is the only valid method of exiting the state of Ihram. Shaving the head is not permissible for women.

Gathering the Hair

Women should begin by gathering their hair into sections, such as braids or ponytails. If the hair is short, it can simply be parted into sections with the fingers.

Trimming the Right Amount

The Prophet’s companions instructed that women should trim the length of a fingertip (about 1–2 centimeters) from the end of each braid or section. Some scholars recommend trimming from multiple sections to ensure that the ritual is fully performed.

Privacy and Dignity

Taqsir for women must be done with modesty and privacy. It should not be done publicly or near the gates of the Haram. Many women perform it quietly in their hotel rooms or designated women’s spaces. Maintaining privacy and dignity is part of the adab (Islamic etiquette) of this ritual.

Halq Vs Taqsir: What is the Difference

Both Halq and Taqsir are valid methods to exit Ihram after completing the rites of Hajj or Umrah. While both fulfill the obligation, the Prophet ﷺ emphasized one as more virtuous. Here’s a simple compariso:

Narrated Abdullah bin Umar (رضي الله عنه):

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their head shaved.” The people said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! And (invoke Allah for) those who get their hair cut short.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “O Allah! Be merciful to those who have their head shaved.” The people said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! And those who get their hair cut short.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said (the third time), “And to those who get their hair cut short.” Nafi` said that the Prophet (ﷺ) had said once or twice, “O Allah! Be merciful to those who get their head shaved,” and on the fourth time he added, “And to those who have their hair cut short.”

This Hadith shows that Halq is more beloved to Allah, as the Prophet ﷺ made du‘ā for those who shave three times, and only once for those who trim. Scholars say this indicates greater reward, humility, and spiritual purification in choosing Halq, especially for those performing their final pilgrimage. However, Taqsir is sunnah, and it will complete your pilgrime.

Significance of Halq and Taqsir

  • Halq (shaving) and Taqsir (trimming) are essential acts that complete the rituals of Hajj and Umrah.
  • They symbolize humility, spiritual renewal, and submission to Allah’s command.
  • The Prophet ﷺ made special du‘ā for those who perform Halq—three times—highlighting its virtue.
  • This act represents leaving behind sin and ego, as if beginning life anew.
  • Though simple in action, Halq and Taqsir are a powerful conclusion to one’s sacred journey.

Final Words

Halq and Taqsir may appear to be simple outward actions, but in the context of Hajj and Umrah, they carry deep spiritual meaning. They are not just acts of grooming—they are acts of obedience, humility, and completion. Through them, a pilgrim submits fully to the will of Allah, shedding pride and worldly attachments along with their hair.

Whether one chooses to shave or trim, what matters most is the sincerity of intention and adherence to the Sunnah. For men, Halq carries greater reward, while for women, Taqsir fulfills the same sacred purpose. Both serve as a final reminder: that the journey to Allah is not only about the movement of the feet, but about the transformation of the heart.

May Allah accept the efforts of every pilgrim and grant us all the honor of performing Hajj and Umrah with hearts full of sincerity and devotion.
