Benefits of Traveling According to the Qur’an
The arabic word for traveling is “saiyr” which appears in the Quran 27 times in different variations. In the Qur’an Allah (SWT) encourages humans to travel for specific and noble purposes using phrases like “Do they not travel?”, “Do Travel”, “Tell them to Travel”, etc.
Let’s check out the benefits of traveling mentioned in the Qur’an.
➢ Gaining Knowledge
Allah (SWT) encourages us to travel to gain knowledge and wisdom. He says in the Qur’an:
Do they then not travel through the Earth, so that their minds gain wisdom and their ears thus learn to hear? For surely it is not the eyes that are blind, but blind are the minds which are in the insides. (Surah Al-Hajj 22:46)
➢ Doing Trade and Commerce:
Allah (SWT) inspires human kind to earn living (Rizq) by traveling, he mentions in the Qur’an:
Then, once the communication is complete, you disperse through the Earth and go in quest of some divine Bounty, and remember God frequently, so that you may succeed. (Surah Al-Jumu’ah 62:10)
➢ Observing Allah’s Creation
Allah (SWT) emphasizes traveling to observe his creation in the following ayah:
Do they not see how God originates creation, then reproduces it: surely that is easy for God./ Say: Travel through the Earth and deeply observe HOW God did originate the creation; then God produces the next creation; surely God has power over all things. (Surah Al-Ankabut 29:19-20)
➢ Learning Archaeology and Lessons from the History
Allah (SWT) asks us to travel and learning lessons from the past. He says in the Qur’an:
Have they not travelled through the Earth and deeply observed the consequences for those who were before them? (Surah Ghafir 40:82)
Who is Considered a Traveler (Musafir) in Islam?
To turn your traveling into an act of worship, you need to know who is considered a musafir in Islam.
If you intend to travel a distance of 78 kilometers or 48 miles or more and stay at a destination for less than fifteen days (according to Hanafi fiqh) or less than four days (according to Hanbali fiqh), you will be considered as a Musaafir (traveler) during your journey and once you reach your destination.
Virtues (Fadhail) of Dua During Travel
Dua during a journey comes with many virtues. Here are four of these virtues of dua for travel.
1. Dua Maximizes the Rewards during Travel
Although traveling itself is a form of ibadah (worship) acts like dua and dhikr (remembrance of Allah) maximizes the rewards. The Prophet (ﷺ) himself used to make frequent duas while traveling.
One hadith says, “Ibn Umar (Allah be pleased with them) reported that whenever Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) mounted his camel while setting out on a journey, he glorified Allah (uttered Allah-o-Akbar) thrice, and made the supplication…”
So every dua made during travel is a form of worship, bringing you closer to Allah.
2. The Dua of a Musafir is Always Accepted
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Three supplications are never rejected: the supplication of a parent for his child, the supplication of a traveler, and the supplication of one who is wronged.”
3. The Traveler is Under Allah (SWT)’s Protection
A traveler can be under Allah’s protection by making supplication.
The Prophet (ﷺ) made special duas for travelers, asking Allah to be their companion on the journey and to protect their families while they are away. In a supplication prophet (SAW) said:
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ، وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ
“O Allah, You are the Companion during travel, and the Protector of my family (left behind).”
4. Protects from Hardships and Dangers of Travel
Making dua and seeking refuge in Allah from the dangers, harms, and hardships of travel can ensure a safe journey. The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ وَسُوءِ الْمُنقَلَبِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ
“O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the difficulties of travel, from a distressing scene, and from an unfortunate return in terms of wealth and family.”
