And to help you get started, we have gathered a few of the best Dua for Hajj and Umrah.

Dua to Read Before Entering Ihram

Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) offered four rakat of Zuhr prayer at Medina and we were in his company, and two rakat of the `Asr prayer at Dhul-Hulaifa and then passed the night there till it was dawn; then he rode, and when he reached Al-Baida’, he praised and glorified Allah and said Takbir (i.e. Al hamdu-li l-lah and Subhanallah(1) and Allahu-Akbar). Then he and the people along with him recited Talbiya with the intention of performing Hajj and Umra.
Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 1551

It is recommended for the pilgrim to recite Tasbeeh, Tahleel and Takbeer (i.e. Al hamdu-li l-lah and Subhanallah and Allahu-Akbar).

The Talbiyah

Transliteration: “Labbaik, Allahumma Labbaik, Labbaik La Sharika laka Labbaik. Inn-al-Hamda Wan-Ni’mata Laka wal-Mulk, La Sharika Lak.”
Translation: ‘I respond to Your call O Allah! I respond to Your call. You have no partner. I respond to Your call. All praise, thanks and blessings are for You. All sovereignty is for You. And You have no partners with You’.

The Talbiyah is a very important part of Umrah as well as Hajj.

Sahl bin Sa’d narrated that :
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There is no Muslim who says the Talbiyah except that – on his right and left, until the end f the land, from here to there – the rocks, or trees, or mud say the Talbiyah.”

Dua to Recite at the Black Stone

Say the Takbeer every time you come in front of the Black stone.
Takbeer: الله أكبر
Transliteration: Allahu Akbar
Translation: Allah is the Greatest

It is proven from the authentic narration that the Prophet ﷺ would say Takbeer each time he crosses the black stone. One should do his best to perform the Hajj and Umrah like the Prophet ﷺ. So you should say the Takbeer as well when you are at the Black Stone during your Tawaf.

Narrated Ibn Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) performed Tawaf of the Kaba riding a camel, and every time he came in front of the Corner (having the Black Stone), he pointed towards it with something he had with him and said Takbir.

Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 1613

The Dua Prophet ﷺ Used to Recite During Tawaf

When the Prophet ﷺ used to reach between the Yemeni corner and the black stone during his Tawaf, he used to recite the following dua.

Narrated Abdullah ibn as-Sa’ib:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say between the two corners:

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Transliteration: Rabbanā ātinā fi d-dunyā ḣasanah wa fi l-ākhirati ḣasanah wa qinā ‘adhāba n-nār
Translation: O Allah, bring us a blessing in this world and a blessing in the next and guard us from punishment of Hell.

Dua to Recite When Climbing Safa

Jabir ibn Abdullah said: … then he ﷺ went out through the gate to Al Safa and when he drew close to Al Safa he recited: “Verily, As-Safa and Al-Marwah are of the Symbols of Allaah” [Al Baqarah 2:158 – interpretation of the meaning], (and he said:) “I begin with that with which Allah began.”

Narrated by Muslim – 1218

However, when one climbs the Safa mountain, he should recite it only the first time.
Here is the verse of the Quran:

[2:158]

Translation: Indeed, ˹the hills of˺ Ṣafa and Marwah1 are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes the major or minor pilgrimage to the ˹Sacred˺ House, let them walk between ˹the two hills˺. And whoever does good willingly, Allah is truly Appreciative, All-Knowing.

Dua to Recite at Safa

The above mentioned hadith in the “Dua to Recite When Climbing Safa” continues “ He ﷺ first mounted al-Safa’ till he ﷺ saw the House, and facing Qibla he declared the Oneness of Allah and glorified Him, and said:

Transliteration: “Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wahdahu laa shareeka lah, lahu’l-mulk wa lahu’l-hamd wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadeer; Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wahdahu anjaza wa’dah wa nasara ‘abdah wa hazama al-ahzaaba wahdah”

Translation: “There is no god but Allah, One, there is no partner with Him. His is the Sovereignty. to Him praise is due. and He is Powerful over everything. There is no god but Allah alone, Who fulfilled His promise, helped His servant and routed the confederates alone.”

“He ﷺ, then made dua between that and repeated this three times.”‏

Narrated by Muslim – 1218

Dua to Recite at Marwa Mountain

When you are at Marwa mountain, do not read the verse of the Quran that you read on Safa. It was done once only when at Safa. When you are at Marwa, recite the same dua as you were told to recite at Safa.

When you are performing Saae, recite the same dua on both the mountain 3 times. Each of the time, make dua in between.

The narration of the above two hadith continues: “He then descended and walked towards al-Marwa, and when his feet came down in the bottom of the valley, he ran, and when he began to ascend he walked till he reached al-Marwa. There he did as he had done at al-Safa’.”

Narrated by Muslim – 1218

Dua to Recite When Drinking ZamZam Water

Zamzam water is the most blessed water in the world. During your Hajj or Umrah, you will get plenty of chances to drink Zamzam water.

It was narrated that Jabir bin ‘Abdullah said:
“I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.’”

We know from the hadith that the Zamzam water is for what it is drunk for. So, when you are drinking the blessed Zamzam water, make a lot of dua. You can make the below dua while drinking Zamzam water:
